What with the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., the war in Vietnam, the summer of riots and the election of Richard Nixon, it seemed as if the country were coming apart. As Jeff Grimshaw tell us below, television was now more than ever seen as an escape from everything the world was throwing at us. Perhaps we need that escape today too. Jeannie assembles a singing group so Tony can go on vacation.

Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart were the songwriting duo who wrote most of the successful songs for The Monkees. They also recorded a couple of albums on their own with their best song being “I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonight,” which reached #8 in early 1968. This episode also a features a brief appearance by Phil Spector. It so sad that he has ended up a such a pathetic character, serving a prison sentence for murder.

I Dream of Jeannie: Happy Anniversary

Jeannie wants to celebrate the first anniversary of meeting Tony on the desert island where they met.

In this episode Michael Ansara plays the Blue Djinn, who was responsible for imprisoning Jeannie in her bottle. Ansara was Barbara Eden’s husband at the time. He got his big break playing Cochise on the 50′s western, “Broken Arrow.”
